    Sharp decline in UK tech jobs highlights ‘deeper structural issues’

    The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) reported a significant decrease in tech job advertisements in the UK, with a 50% drop since pre-pandemic levels. Software development roles, particularly at the entry level, have seen the most substantial decline, down by nearly 70% since 2019-2020. The report links this trend to the rise of AI and the relocation of tech roles to foreign countries. Entry-level roles are more affected, with a fourfold increase in advertisements for senior roles. The study also notes that the skills required for tech jobs are changing, with a greater emphasis on project management and data science. Hg Foundation CEO James Turner emphasized the importance of understanding which parts of the tech sector will grow and the skills needed for young people to access these opportunities.
