Steel and aluminum duties: A 25% US tariff on imports of steel and aluminum from all countries took effect on Wednesday, March 12. Levies on Canada and Mexico: The US paused tariffs on goods and services compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April 2. That agreement remains in effect, the White House said Wednesday. Venezuela: Trump said the US will impose a 'secondary tariff' on Venezuela, to take effect on April 2 — any country that buys oil or gas from Venezuela would face a 25% tariff when trading with the US. Canada and Mexico were curiously missing from the White House's lengthy list of countries to which a new blanket 10% tariff — and potentially higher 'reciprocal' duties — will apply. That's because of a previous agreement that was hashed out in the run-up to President Trump's earlier threats on the countries, according to the White House. That means most imports from Canada and Mexico are not subject to any tariffs — as long as they are compliant with terms in the Trump-negotiated USMCA. Still, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney hinted a response from the country would be forthcoming. Stuart Kaiser, Citi's head of US equity trading strategy, wrote in a note to clients late Wednesday that the tariff announcements were worse than investor expectations and he doesn't recommend buying the dip in stocks yet. 'The pattern of negative headlines, delayed deadlines and better-than-feared implementation seems likely to continue and the President's announcement included the potential for rollbacks based on negotiated bi-lateral outcomes,' Kaiser wrote. 'In our view, tariffs are likely to remain a repeated headwind.' Tech stocks sold off following Trump's sweeping tariff announcements. Apple led the declines as shares fell nearly 7% in after-hours trading. Apple's overseas production hubs are particularly vulnerable, given the iPhone maker's presence in countries like China, Vietnam, and India. These countries will face tariffs of 34%, 46%, and 26%, respectively. 'Apple produces basically all their iPhones in China, and the question will be around exceptions and exemptions on this tariff policy if those companies are building more operations, factories, and plants in the US like Apple announced in February,' Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said in a note to clients on Wednesday. Chip stocks should also face significant pressure with Nvidia and other semiconductor companies exposed to China and Taiwan supply chains. 'The worry will be around pricing and margin impacts along with what this means for the global supply chain looking forward,' Ives said. For now, the analyst continues to believe major negotiations will happen over the coming months as companies attempt to navigate 'this new world of tariffs.' Until then, he warned, 'tech stocks will clearly be under major pressure.'
