    Tech companies urge EU to preserve voluntary detection of child abuse content in online platforms

    Tech companies and platforms are advocating for the EU to preserve the voluntary detection of illegal content, such as child sexual abuse images, on online platforms. The current temporary exemption under the EU’s e-privacy law is set to expire in April 2026, and negotiations have been ongoing since 2022 without reaching a consensus. The latest proposal by Poland removes controversial detection orders and focuses on voluntary detection, which is supported by tech companies and NGOs like EDRi, Thorn, and ECPAT.
