Shanghai's driverless taxi launches trial services following issuance of China's first demonstration licenses
Shanghai has begun trial operations for driverless taxis after receiving China's first demonstration licenses. Pony.ai, in collaboration with Shanghai Jinjiang Taxi, launched Robotaxi services in Pudong's Jinqiao and Huamu areas, with residents booking rides via the Pony.ai app. The service operates from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and charges 16.8 yuan for a 5 km trip. The city aims to expand autonomous driving zones to achieve full coverage in Pudong by 2027, with a projected robotaxi market growth from $54 million in 2025 to $47 billion by 2035.
