Volvo Trucks North America officially opened orders for its redesigned VNR Class 8 truck on September 23, 2025. The Class 8 truck is designed for regional and urban operations with fuel efficiency, safety and connectivity being major focuses. Volvo said the truck is available for order at its dealerships across the U.S. and Canada. The New River Valley Plant in Virginia will spearhead production of the new model, with that expected to begin in February 2026. “The street smart VNR is a true workhorse, designed specifically for the demanding nature of regional and urban delivery where tight corners, traffic and safety risks and fuel costs matter more than ever,” VTNA President Peter Voorhoeve said. “With this model, we are raising the bar on safety, delivering measurable fuel savings and giving fleets real choices to match their routing needs. We are excited to open the order books and start getting trucks slotted for production.”

The Volvo VNR was engineered for the unique demands of regional‑haul applications, with the end result unveiled in March. Volvo said 90% of the new model has been redesigned from the previous generation. Much of the focus of this redesign was improving fuel economy through enhanced aerodynamics, powertrain features and idling systems. The truck also incorporates safety innovations such as integrated side curtain air bags and features a tighter turning radius for navigating congested urban routes.

Volvo also identified market opportunities that helped drive development of the new truck, including regional and urban haul growth due to rising e-commerce demand, tight delivery windows and increasing regulations in urban areas. The company also made connectivity a focus of the development process to provide drivers and carriers real‑time insights. The Volvo VNR is available in a wide range of configurations including 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 tractors. The trucks also are available as straight trucks with multiple body types. Fleets can further customize their vehicles by selecting the cab model, trim level, technology and driver amenity packages through a new configurator application available to customers.
