Texas Walmart shooter agrees to pay more than $5M to families over 2019 racist attack

Patrick Crusius, the white gunman who killed 23 people in a 2019 racist attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, has agreed to pay over $5.5 million in restitution to the victims' families. The agreement, approved by U.S. District Judge David Guaderrama, follows a federal hate crime conviction and 90 consecutive life sentences imposed in July 2023. Crusius, who was 21 at the time of the attack and had dropped out of community college, previously posted online warnings of a Hispanic 'invasion' of Texas and expressed support for Donald Trump's border policies. His attorneys and the Justice Department reached a restitution agreement, which is part of broader federal efforts to improve restitution payments from incarcerated individuals. Texas prosecutors have indicated they plan to seek the death penalty in state court, though a trial date has not yet been set.
