GM’s New Battery Tech Could Be a Breakthrough for Affordable EVs
General Motors has developed a new lithium manganese-rich (LMR) battery technology that offers 30% greater energy density at comparable production costs, potentially reducing the cost of its electric SUVs to match gasoline counterparts. The technology, produced in partnership with LG Energy Solutions, aims to bypass China's dominance in EV battery IP and expand affordable electric vehicle options in the U.S. Production of LMR cells is scheduled to begin in 2027, with full-scale deployment in 2028.
