In a dramatic December 2024, eight days after announcing that it would close all stores, Big Lots reached a deal with a buyer to keep hundreds of locations open. Big Lots closed 34 locations in Arizona by the end of 2024. Although the buyer of the company announced in April that it would be reopening some Big Lots, all of the targeted stores are in Southern and Midwestern states.

Forever 21
All of Forever 21’s 354 stores in the U.S. closed on May 1 after the fast‑fashion retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March. In the years leading up to its bankruptcy, Forever 21 struggled with competition from online retailers like Shein and Temu, according to USA TODAY. Forever 21 still operates its international stores and takes online orders.

Joann Fabrics
Beloved craft retailer Joann first filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 and again in January 2025, less than a year later. In February, it announced it would be shutting down. Joann closed its approximately 850 stores across the United States, including 17 in Arizona, by May.

Macy’s
Macy’s closed its Mesa location as part of a plan to close 65 stores across the country. There are six Macy’s left in Arizona.

Party City
Party City was facing financial trouble for years, and first filed for bankruptcy in January 2023. In late December 2024, Party City announced it was going out of business and closing all stores, including 15 in Arizona.

Hooter’s
The restaurant chain filed for bankruptcy on March 31 after closing dozens of stores in 2024. In Arizona, all Hooter’s in Arizona are owned and operated by franchisee Restaurants of America, which said Hooter’s bankruptcy will have no impact on Arizona stores.

Kohl’s
Kohl’s announced in January that it would close 27 underperforming stores across the country by April, but no Arizona stores were on the list.

Walgreens
Walgreens first announced widespread store closures in October 2024, when the pharmacy said it planned to close 1,200 underperforming stores. Walgreens has no plans to close any stores in Arizona, according to a Walgreens spokesperson.

Kroger
Grocery store company Kroger announced in June it will close about 60 stores across the United States in the next 18 months. Kroger owns two grocery chains in Arizona: Fry’s, which has 130 locations in the state, and Smith’s, which has four. Kroger has not released a full list of stores set to close, but the running list of locations affected doesn’t include any in Arizona.
