E.l.f. argues against overpriced cosmetics with legal-themed campaign

E.l.f. Cosmetics launched a satirical legal-themed campaign titled 'e.l.f.ino & schmarnes' featuring drag superstar Heidi N Closet and comedian Matt Rife as fictional legal duo 'e.l.f.ino' and 'schmarnes,' promoting accessible, affordable beauty products. The campaign includes a 60-second video and an in-person event at The Oculus in New York City on August 13. The video highlights consumer complaints about overpriced makeup, using a play on E.l.f.'s acronym for eyes, lips, and face. Attendees at the event can file beauty complaints and win E.l.f. products or gift cards. The brand emphasizes affordability, with 75% of its products priced at $10 and under. E.l.f. Beauty reported a 9% year-over-year increase in net sales to $353.7 million in its fiscal first quarter of 2026, despite a 30% year-over-year decline in profits due to new tariffs on Chinese imports. The company previously launched similar campaigns, including 'Judge Beauty' with Judy Sheindlin and 'Cosmetic Criminals,' and has partnered with Pinterest to develop an AI-powered color analysis tool called 'color e.l.f.nalysis.'
