Cannon-Brookes-backed food waste recycling startup banks $10 million bridging round

Goterra, a Canberra-based food waste recycling startup founded in 2016 by a former sheep farmer, has raised $10 million in a bridging round to expand its food waste treatment operations in western Sydney. The company uses black soldier fly maggots to convert food waste into high-value protein and fertilizer within 12 days, with a $3.5 million processing plant being built at Wetherill Park, 38km west of Sydney’s CBD. Goterra currently processes food waste from Woolworths stores in Canberra, which has committed to zero food waste going to landfill by 2025. The startup previously raised $8 million in mid-2020 with backing from Tenacious Ventures and Grok Ventures, the family fund of Atlassian cofounder Mike Cannon-Brookes. Goterra also operates commercial facilities in Albury and Barangaroo, processing waste from Woolworths, retail, hospitality, and food producers. The company plans to raise a Series B funding round later in the year.
