Xcel wants to power Colorado's data centers in 2024. Will the demand be there?
Xcel Energy, Colorado’s largest utility, is preparing to meet a projected surge in data‑center electricity demand. With 6.2 GW of current capacity, the company faces 5.8 GW of pending data‑center requests and expects loads of 8.5 GW by 2040. To accommodate this, Xcel plans to add 12–14 GW of new generation and transmission at a $22 billion cost, but regulators and industry groups warn that the forecast may be overly optimistic, risking stranded assets for ratepayers.
