GM Defy Tariff Import China EV Batteries
General Motors (GM) will import lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) batteries from China’s CATL for its upcoming Chevrolet Bolt, even with an 80% tariff. The move is aimed at keeping the Bolt affordable at about $30,000 and maintaining production timelines. GM plans to use CATL batteries for roughly two years while a joint venture with LG Energy Solution will start local production in Tennessee by 2027. The new Bolt will be assembled at GM’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas and reach dealerships in 2026. The decision follows the elimination of the federal EV tax credit and the cost advantage of LFP chemistry, which is about 35% cheaper than nickel‑cobalt batteries.
