    Forwarders scramble for alternatives as Canadian rail strike looks set

    Forwarders are preparing for a potential shutdown of the Canadian rail freight network due to a contract dispute between the Teamsters union and railways Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). The Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association, along with industry groups, has urged the government to intervene, but Ottawa has not yet intervened. Cargo owners are considering alternative routings, with some already diverting traffic. The ports of Montreal and Halifax have operated normally, while Vancouver Port has made preparations to alleviate congestion. However, trucking capacity is not expected to fully compensate for the rail shutdown.
