Equity benchmark indices witnessed heavy selling pressure on Friday amid weak global cues after the US President Donald Trump vowed to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico as planned from 4 March onwards.

At the closing bell on Wednesday, the BSE Sensex closed Lower by 1414 points (down 1.9%).

Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty closed 420 points lower (down 1.9%).

HDFC Bank, Trent, Hindalco were the top gainers.

Wipro, Tech Mahindra and Jio Financial on the other hand, were among the top losers.

The BSE Mid Cap ended 2.2% Lower and BSE SmallCap index ended 2.3% Lower.

Sectoral indices were trading on a negative note with stocks in auto sector, power sector and FMCG sector witnessing selling pressure.

Rupee Falls to New Lows Again

The Indian rupee extended its losing streak in February, marking its fifth consecutive monthly decline. The downward pressure on the rupee was primarily driven by a surge in foreign portfolio outflows, as investors withdrew funds from the Indian market. Additionally, increased hedging activities in both the onshore and non-deliverable forward markets further exacerbated the rupee's decline.

The Indian rupee has ended the month of February on a weak note, falling 1% against the US dollar. It slipped to an all-time low of 87.9 during the month, before closing at 87.4 against the US dollar in the previous session, down from 87.2.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has played a crucial role in stabilizing the Indian rupee, despite its fifth consecutive monthly decline in February. Through periodic interventions, the RBI has effectively curbed one-way moves on the domestic unit, preventing speculators from betting against the rupee.

Foreign investors have been on a selling spree in the Indian market, offloading nearly US$ 3.5 bn (Rs 305.8 bn) worth of local stocks in February alone, taking the total outflows to a staggering $12.5 bn in 2025.

Overall, the Indian rupee's fifth consecutive monthly decline in February reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the currency. The surge in foreign portfolio outflows and increased hedging activities have both contributed to the rupee's decline, highlighting the need for policymakers to implement measures to stabilize the currency and attract foreign investment.

Oil and Gas Shares Face Pressure

The BSE Oil & Gas Index is experiencing a sharp downturn, with losses extending to a fifth consecutive day on 28 February 2025. This decline is in line with the broader market sell-off, driven by a combination of factors specific to the oil and gas sector.

The oil and gas sector are experiencing a significant downturn, with several major players witnessing substantial declines in their stock prices. Oil India shares have plummeted by 6.1 to Rs 343.7, leading the decline. Other notable players in the sector, including ONGC, GAIL, and Bharat Petroleum Corp, are also trading lower, with declines ranging from 2.9 t to 3.1 %

In contrast, Reliance Industries is bucking the trend, trading marginally higher at 0.2 %.
