Fallen communication tower, not cell tower, knocks out power to 25,000 in Carol Stream, Illinois

A communication tower collapsed in Carol Stream, Illinois, knocking out power for over 25,000 ComEd customers across several DuPage County communities. The structure was not a cell tower, despite initial media reports suggesting otherwise; it was a guyed communication tower that fell onto a high-voltage transmission line. Power was restored by 10:10 p.m. on Friday. The tower is not listed in the FCC database because it is under 200 feet and did not require lamping. While the tower was not a cell tower, some residents reported internet outages, possibly due to it supporting wireless internet for a provider. Nearby cell towers are owned by SBA Communications and T-Mobile. The outage led to temporary closures of local facilities, including Coral Cove Water Park.
