North Lanarkshire Council approves 30MW BESS
North Lanarkshire Council has approved a 30MW/60MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) to be developed by Renewable Connections at a site on Burnbank Street in Coatbridge. The system will connect to SP Energy Networks Coatbridge and is expected to support the council's net zero by 2030 target, optimize renewable energy integration across the UK, and improve grid stability. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the project operational for up to 40 years. The approval follows previous project consents in Scotland and aligns with broader UK efforts to integrate low-carbon technologies, which National Grid estimates could save the energy system up to £40 billion by 2025.
