One clear sign can tell you a lot about whether someone is leading well or failing miserably. Sometimes it isn't always obnoxious, toxic, or obvious. Sometimes it shows up in small, everyday moments—how someone talks to their team, or how they treat people when no one's watching. You don't need a long list to spot it, either. A few can tell you a lot about whether someone is leading well… or just holding the title. For example, do you work with or for someone unable to budge or view things differently? Do they steamroll ahead with a decision without soliciting feedback? Here is one quick way to recognize bad leadership before it does real damage. A lack of patience They may find it difficult to have patience and tolerance for differences that don’t fit with their ideal needs and expectations. While counterintuitive in fast-moving, hard-driving pressure cooker environments, the benefits of patience at work may flip the script. Patient individuals also report being more mindful, feeling more grateful, more connected to society and the universe, and having a greater sense of abundance. Promote More Leaders with Patience We want to place more patient leaders into roles directly impacting employee well-being, which the evidence strongly suggests. In one , 2,248 employees from tech companies and household brands like Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Uber were asked to reveal which trait they find to be the worst in a boss. “Micromanager” was the No. 1 response overall. Not too far behind was “impatient.” Entry-level workers were even more put off by an inpatient, micromanaging boss than any other grouping. Twenty percent of them agreed that their managers were “impatient.” It is widely accepted that those in top management positions significantly impact the organization’s culture. When they demonstrate patience, it inspires others to develop this skill. With that in mind, we need more leaders to establish a culture or team that values patience. It starts with them modeling the behaviors for others to follow.
