Multiple vape and tobacco stores in Smithfield have closed their doors, possibly for good, as authorities investigate their alleged involvement in illegal marijuana sales and selling vapes to kids, according to the town's police department. On Monday, police executed search warrants at four businesses, acting on tips that the stores were selling marijuana illegally, according to Smithfield Police Chief Alonzo Howell. He says the department received information four months ago about the distribution of marijuana and the sale of vapes to minors, although they didn't elaborate on ages. Police say they found marijuana at all four locations, adding that one or two owners of the four stores may be connected to these sales in some way. The town has issued a notice to close the businesses permanently. "...there will be no more sales from the various addresses where the businesses are located, and those for whom we have arrest warrants will be charged," said Chief Howell. Police didn't share the names of the businesses they searched. However, a WTKR News 3 crew was at Tobacco and Vape Monday while police were there, who confirmed to us that the business is one of the four under investigation. That's located on South Church Street. Chief Howell encourages families to engage in discussions with their children about the dangers of marijuana as they continue to investigate. Smithfield police say they're collaborating with multiple agencies during the ongoing investigation, including the Virginia DMV Law Enforcement Division, the Town of Smithfield, the Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office, the Virginia State Police Drug Task Force, the Virginia State Police and the Isle of Wight Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
