The American Hospital Association (AHA) recently presented its 100-year milestone award to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. Liz Summy, FACHE, AHA Regional Executive, presented the award to Robert Wethal, Chief Nursing Officer, and Sue Meade, VP of Professional and Support Services. The award recognizes MercyOne for 100 years of participation and leadership in the AHA. While the AHA was founded in 1898, the first year of admitting institutional members was 1919. MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is among the AHA’s earliest members. ‘The AHA 100-year milestone award is a testament to MercyOne’s long-standing commitment to delivering high-quality and compassionate health care to the Dubuque community and Eastern Iowa. In 1879, the Sisters of Mercy opened St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Dubuque at the request of Bishop John Hennessy to launch a healing ministry now known as MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. The original hospital was in a rented house near Third and Bluff Streets. From its humble beginnings, MercyOne Dubuque has grown into the leading tri-state hospital, offering the area’s only comprehensive cardiology center and Level II regional neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The medical center also features the MercyOne Dubuque Cancer Center. This comprehensive cancer center offers state-of-the-art care from diagnosis to survivorship.
