Alabama House committee advances bill to cut half of state’s 4% sales tax on groceries

Alabama lawmakers have advanced a bill to reduce half of the state’s 4% sales tax on groceries, a move supported by bipartisan lawmakers and aimed at helping low-income families. The legislation, part of an appropriations package, includes a nearly $9 billion education trust fund, a one-time tax rebate of $210 per taxpayer and $420 for married couples, and a new state savings account called the Educational Opportunities Reserve Fund. The tax reduction would be phased in gradually, with the goal of lowering the grocery tax to 2%, contingent on sufficient tax revenue growth to offset losses. While the proposal has broad support, some education advocacy groups have expressed concerns about the potential loss of revenue for the state education budget, which currently receives $608 million annually from the grocery tax. The bill now moves to the full House of Representatives.
