Jack Smith, a former war crimes prosecutor at The Hague, has pursued public officials in the US and abroad for the past two decades. He has been named special counsel in two criminal investigations into former President Donald Trump, and has charged him with 40 felony counts over his alleged mishandling of classified documents. Mr Smith is expected to charge Mr Trump separately on his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The office of Special Counsel Robert Hur spent about $615,000 through the end of March, according to the Department of Justice.
