I got to know about OpenRewrite in a conference... alas I don't remember anymore which one was: either of JBCNConf, DevBCN or Devoxx UK. Anyway, I always wanted to try out this open source tool ever since. This year I had the chance to use it to upgrade from SpringBoot 2.0 to 2.7, and also to migrate from Java 8 to Java 11, 17 and 21, and I was very pleased to see it in action. This tool can save hours of tedious work for removing some tech debt from your repos and I fully recommend it. #techdebt #cleancode #openrewrite #java #springboot

I'm continuing to find that AI agents empowered by #OpenRewrite recipes as tools are a powerful way of searching and understanding large codebases (think whole business units) at a level that exists below what is visible in the text of the code. Any recipe that emits a data table (find APIs, transitive dependency insight, find sensitive API endpoints, find SQL usages, and many others) is a natural tool. Agents can combine these tools to answer more complex questions about the state of a codebase. Really excited about where this is going. One thing is pretty clear to me though: * The models themselves are pretty interchangeable. They're all kind of good enough. * The data (below the surface of what is visible in text) is what makes the magic happen.
