Like many local business leaders, Melissa Flynn, General Manager of the Oakey RSL Club believes the Queensland Government’s decision to approve New Acland Mine Stage 3 has delivered a much-needed economic boost for the region.

A $360,000 funding extension from New Hope Group will allow the PCYC Oakey Connect Program to support the region’s young people for another two years. Two years ago, New Hope Group stepped-in and prevented the PCYC Oakey Connect program from closing. New Acland Coal has reached a significant milestone, with its 250th full-time employee starting work at New Acland Mine last month. The achievement comes less than two years after the Queensland Government critically assessed and approved the Stage 3 project. The 250 worker milestone includes more than a dozen new-to-industry jobs.

The team at New Acland Coal recently hosted PhD students from The University of Queensland ’s Sustainable Minerals Institute. The visit included a tour of the mine and conversations about NAC’s progressive rehabilitation methods, land use and biodiversity and community consultation.

The team at New Acland Coal was delighted to host the Indigenous Business Month ‘Special’ Black Coffee Indigenous Business Network event in Oakey earlier this month. More than 50 local business leaders including Pat Weir MP , Cr Edwina Farquhar and members of Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise attended the informative event at the Oakey RSL. Black Coffee is a grassroots Indigenous business networking gathering held in regions around Australia each month. Originating in Queensland but now across Australia, the goal of the Black Coffee movement is to provide a platform to connect micro and small business owners around Australia. Indigenous business owners and professionals, along with their supporters, get together and yarn with the aim to build relationships and grow networks.

Congratulations to New Hope Group’s Bengalla Mining Company Pty Limited which won the “Large Host Employer of the Year” category at the prestigious Apprentice Employment Network NSW & ACT Awards on Friday night. The award recognises our amazing apprenticeship program and partnership with MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees . Since 2013, the team at Bengalla has hosted 72 apprentices and trainees, who also complete the Mining and Energy Skills program at Muswellbrook TAFE. We believe developing, coaching and leading young people, and introducing them to our industry and operation is critical to our success. We’re also proud to foster new talent in our industry and champion workplace diversity.
