Unlike other grains, fonio’s small size and husk structure makes it difficult to separate the husk from the grain without specialized tools or equipment. The traditional threshing and dehusking processes are both labor-intensive and time-consuming, often requiring extensive manual labor. This process is a significant burden on smallholder farmers who often lack access to advanced machinery, relying instead on traditional methods that are physically demanding and slow. AgroEknor is working closely with fonio farmers to develop market linkages and secure funding for better equipment needed to automate this process. This support aims to provide long-term solutions to ease post-harvest labor and improve product quality.
