ICYMI, November 10 was World Science Day! As science communicators, we help all kinds of audiences—from researchers to clinicians, patients, and the general public—understand complex scientific concepts. So we're launching a new occasional series focusing our science communication on different types of drugs, aka drug modalities. Welcome to Modality Mondays! You may have heard these mentioned, but perhaps want to know more about how some of the lesser-known approaches work to treat various diseases. These newer drug modalities build on the traditional small molecules and biologics, offering unique mechanisms of action. Their existence opens up new frontiers in drug development, particularly for the treatment of complex and rare diseases, cancer, or genetic disorders where traditional small molecules and biologics may not be sufficient. Up first - antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs)! This nifty modality is made of short, synthetic strands of nucleic acids designed to bind to specific RNA sequences. By binding to mRNA, the ASOs can modulate gene expression, typically by blocking protein translation or altering splicing patterns.
