Miele is a family-run company in the fourth generation with eight production plants in Germany as well as one plant each in Austria, the Czech Republic, China and Romania. The company is represented with its own sales subsidiaries and via importers in almost 100 countries. In the 2020 fiscal year,  the Miele Group achieved sales of 4.5 bn, 6.5% more than in 2019. Miele employs around 20,944 people worldwide.

Given the global slump in demand for domestic appliances and drastic price increases on the cost side, Miele is strengthening its competitiveness and its premium service. "What we are currently experiencing is not just a blip in the economic cycle but rather a sustainable shift in the framework conditions which are relevant to us and to which we must adjust", the Executive Board of the Miele Group announced today.
 
In terms of long-term countermeasures, a companywide cost and efficiency initiative to improve structures, processes and costs has been launched. The Miele Performance Program should generate around € 500 million additional financial room to manoeuvre by 2026. According to current plans, up to 2,700 of the current 23,000 jobs worldwide could potentially be affected. The process will be carried out as socially responsible as possible.

"These are grave measures, and we are fully aware that this will hit many colleagues hard", the Executive Board continues. Only this way will it be possible to put Miele back on track towards a successful future – as a strong and independent family company with a clear focus on premium and with the necessary earning power in all areas.

Our second oldest production plant within the Miele Group is located in Bielefeld, Germany. It offers the broadest of the Miele product portfolio: vacuum cleaners, domestic and commercial dishwashers as well as washer-disinfectors for hospitals, surgeries and laboratories for our Professional Business Unit. 
 
We have a number of sustainability projects underway in Bielefeld. 🍃 
 
In 2023, for example, we managed to recover a great deal of heat and thereby saving 185,000 kg of CO2 through the reduced use of district heating and natural gas, compared to 2022. By reducing the water-temperature in our production end-of-line checks, Bielefeld saved of another 68,000 kg of CO2 per year. And Concerning Health Management, for example, we organized a blood donation day with a high participation of our employees.
 
Step by step, we are becoming more and more sustainable in many areas. 🙌

Our production plant in Euskirchen, known as our “Technology Center Drives” was founded in 1951 and has grown to become our Competence Centre for the development and production of drive systems, fans and pumps for use in our finished Miele appliances. 🙌 

Here, we are designing and manufacturing electrical drives for all of our vacuum cleaners, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. This lineup is augmented by cable reels for vacuum cleaners. 

All this makes Euskirchen an internal supplier to seven other Miele production plants. With its durable and energy-efficient drive systems, Euskirchen makes an important contribution to our sustainability strategy. 

And the most beautiful aspect at the end: Since last year, we have been supporting the "The Euskirchen district is flourishing" project, which aims to preserve and promote typical biodiversity in the villages of the Eifel and Zülpicher Börde. We’ve therefore planted a flowering meadow on our factory grounds and have sown the seeds together with our employees. Next spring, poppies and cornflowers will start to grow on an area of 3,000 square meters. We are looking forward to some wonderful pictures from Euskirchen! 💐

Our factory in Arnsberg, Germany, is the centre of excellence for the development and production of our cooker hoods, and part of the business unit 'Cooking'. 👩🍳

Arnsberg is one of our plants that has a high degree versatility in manufacturing - from series production to the manufacture of medium batch sizes through to individual customized products. Although Arnsberg is one of our smallest plants, we have already taken some great steps towards sustainability. 🍃

For example, we have already installed a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 35 kWp which is fully used in our production. And we have just started a project on geothermal energy, where the first drilling has already been done.

Get to know one of our biggest plants: Uničov in the Czech Republic, where we produce tumble dryers for domestic and semi-commercial use, as well as dishwashers. 🙌

We have been continuously working on reducing the energy consumption of our plant and have over 200 measuring devices that help us to analyse and optimise the consumption of energy.  

Let’s have a look at one example: We have reduced the consumption of natural gas on the dryer of the passivation line by 40% on an annual average due to modify the technology settings.  

Also worth mentioning is our upcoming project focused on electricity saving. We are analysing the amount of energy that is consumed by machines in stand-by mode and trying to optimize most of them. Our aim is to minimize the consumption of energy or switch the machines off as much as possible so that they even consume 0 watt!

Our ‘plant for connoisseurs’ in Oelde, Germany, is our competence centre for the development and production of ovens of all kinds. It belongs to our 'cooking products' business unit and also offers a lot of sustainable projects.  🍃

Particularly noteworthy are energy-optimized workflows and processes – for example, energy is saved through data-controlled building management systems or heat recovery from production. With the use of this, we have already saved 914,000 KWh per year. In 2022 around 41.5 % of the total building heating energy was realized through heat recovery in Oelde.

And we make use of green steel and green primary aluminium in our ovens. Both are manufactured with electricity made from hydropower. Compared with conventionally produced primary aluminium, this saves Miele 645 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Additionally, the aluminium used in our ovens is 100% recyclable.

When it comes to health management, one thing is key – pleasure. Through events such as ‘active cooking’ or so called ‘gourmet hikes’, colleagues not only receive valuable tips on a healthy diet, but also enjoy time quality together and exchange ideas, for example delicious recipes.👩🍳

Our newest production plant is in Ksawerów, Poland. Besides Gütersloh, this is our second washing machine plant. 

Since 2019 this plant has been running with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, not only regarding digitization, but also in face of sustainability. 🍃

After the last construction measures the heating demand for the main part of our buildings is covered by geothermal energy now (up to 60 % overall coverage for the plant at full capacity load). Moreover, we will expand our green energy production with photovoltaic systems at the rooftop of our plant in 2024. With an installed power of about 1,67 MWp we gain solar energy of more than 1200 MWh each year. This would be enough to supply almost 500 two-person households (assuming an average consumption of 2500 kWh per year). 

One of our latest achievements is improving our logistics, and thereby reducing CO2 emissions. By analyzing and realigning the routes between our upstream suppliers and prefabrication last year, we were able to save 1225 kg of CO2 per week or 14,700 kg per year.

At our production plant in Asia, Dongguan, China, we currently have the largest photovoltaic installation at Miele worldwide. 🌏

A system with a total of nearly 10,000 PV modules has been in operation since 2022. In 2023, it completely covered the electricity requirements of our factory and generated more than 5.000 MWh of electricity, which is much more than we needed at our site. We therefore fed surplus quantities into the grid.

A solid example for easy and environmentally friendly generating of power! ⚡
