As renewable energy expands, batteries are more than just a tool — they are vital to grid stability and meeting global energy goals. The report underscores several critical aspects that align closely with Australian Flow Batteries’ (AFB's) mission: - Batteries must scale rapidly to meet global energy goals. Battery storage needs to increase 14-fold by 2030 to 1,200 GW globally, with batteries accounting for 90% of the required energy storage increase. - Cost reduction is key. The IEA notes that battery prices have dropped by 90% in the past 15 years. - Battery supply chains need diversification. With current battery manufacturing and mineral sourcing concentrated in a few countries, the world needs new solutions. - Utility-scale batteries are critical. The IEA highlights the increasing competitiveness of batteries paired with renewable energy. - Batteries play a direct role in reducing close to 20% of the CO2 emissions needed by 2030, with an additional 40% reduction through the support of broader clean electrification efforts. Interest in long-duration energy storage (LDES) is rising rapidly as demand for clean reliable capacity grows 🔋 In the US, new funding was announced in a bid to propel a variety of LDES technologies toward commercial viability. The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) has allocated $100 million for non-lithium, long-duration energy storage pilots.
