The CIIE (China International Import Expo) 2024 has concluded. This unique exhibition is dedicated to foreign brands exporting to China and is the largest of its kind, held at the Hongqiao Exhibition Center every November. It stands out because it features small niche brands seeking market entry and distributors, alongside major international brands with established presences like BMW and Lululemon. In addition to brand booths, there are also country booths showcasing regional products. So, as a brand looking to enter the Chinese market, is it worth attending? It depends. The attendance fees are quite high, making it challenging for smaller brands to participate. Moreover, most country booths focus on food and drinks, so if you're not in that industry, it might not make sense to place, say, a clothing brand next to displays of wines and beer. However, we do receive positive feedback from brands and companies we work with, indicating they do find distributors at CIIE. CIFF Shanghai is underway, showcasing furniture, design, and home products at the massive expo center in Hongqiao, Shanghai. Both Chinese and international brands are presenting their products in stunning booths. The show is open for another day, so take the opportunity to visit.

Livestreaming is huge in China. Larger brands host nonstop livestreams in their stores on Tmall, while livestreamers on Douyin and RED host 4 to 6-hour long sessions, promoting 100 to 200 different products in one go. Crazy? This might not work in the West, but in China, customers find livestreaming a popular way to shop. Customers either follow bloggers they like and trust to select new products and brands, or they see the nonstop store streams as a replacement for in-store staff. These streams explain all the features, provide some human connection, and allow shoppers to ask questions live and get immediate answers. Livestreams on social media are built on discounts—you have to offer discounts. Streams in brand stores on platforms like Tmall are operated by hired staff in dedicated studios. Whether you're a small or large brand, livestreaming should be considered in your China strategy. Sell to China through a cross-border or domestic store? Whether it's Tmall, JD, or WeChat, they all offer these two options. Cross-border sounds simpler and, in many ways, it is—you don't need a Chinese trademark or local certification. But beneath the surface, there are higher costs, including higher taxes, warehouse costs, and higher operational fees like a non-refundable annual fee. Domestic stores and having a warehouse locally in China will likely be cheaper for you, though this also depends on your sales volume. We often see brands first open a cross-border shop and obtain necessary certifications, then open a new domestic store. This sounds simple, but the truth is you will lose all the reviews and sales history in the process, and it will cost you a lot of time and effort too. Trademarks in China work a bit differently from those in Europe. The most important thing to know is that it's all about who files the mark first. Winning disputes by arguing that you already used the name or design abroad is pointless—you will lose. The famous Ralph Lauren Polo brand is counterfeited all across China, with fake brand stores in every city, and the brand can't do much about it. It takes 8 to 12 months to get your trademarks registered in China, which is a long time, so start as soon as possible. If you want to open social media accounts, a Tmall store, or other e-commerce platforms for domestic sales, you will need those trademarks.
