In 1924, Arthur Rawdon Spinney, a British army officer stationed in Alexandria, Egypt, identified a need in the area for imported food products, planting the seed for what would later be one of the Middle East’s leading supermarket chains.

Spinneys’ Dubai story started in 1961, with our first supermarket opening in Al Nasr Square in 1962. At that time, it was known locally as ‘The Frozen Chicken’ – the only retailer to sell frozen chickens from a chiller van. Such innovation has remained. Spinneys enjoys a well-deserved reputation for forward-thinking, keeping pace with changes in cooking trends and the emergence of new products worldwide.

Today, Spinneys Dubai, owned by UAE national Mr Ali Albwardy, has built a strong name for supplying top quality produce and offering a high level of customer service. Yet food standards, safety and freshness have always been at the forefront of the company’s ethos – just one reason why the Spinneys brand is defined as ‘The fresher experience’.

We are immensely proud to announce that Spinneys has bagged the Food Waste Management Award at the Gulfood Green Awards this year.

At Spinneys, we ensure that quality food that does not sell is provided to communities in need around the UAE. We work with a range of partners including Red Crescent and the UAE Food Bank who collect and donate food from our stores daily. Expired produce that would not be fit for human consumption is delivered to the Stray Dogs Shelter in Umm Al Quwain.

We are also working with local farms to reduce their waste through our ‘Naturally I’m Perfect’ range and are exploring other opportunities to divert waste. We were also the first retailer to partner with WWF-Emirates Nature’s Food for Life campaign to raise awareness about food waste during Ramadan 2022, where we provided our customers with helpful tips, serving guidance, and storage tips to help make their food go further. With the support of the UAE Food Bank, we donated more than 10,000 meals to people in need last Ramadan.

The new CEO of Bord Bia - The Irish Food Board, Jim O'Toole visited our Umm Suqeim store for a tour, exploring the wide range of Irish products on shelf and discussing the strength of the partnership between Spinneys and the Origin-Green verified food suppliers.
