We recently surveyed 200 in-house pentesters to see how they’re tackling evolving threats, managing budgets, and prioritizing security. Here’s the TL;DR 👇 1️⃣ Frequent Testing is the New Standard 77% of testers perform assessments quarterly, monthly, or continuously. Continuous testing (9.5%) has surpassed annual testing (7.5%), allowing faster detection and mitigation of emerging threats. 2️⃣ Internal Networks Take Priority Half of the testers focus on internal networks, followed by 42% on external testing. Web applications, social engineering, and cloud environments are now key areas of focus as well. 3️⃣ Weak Passwords Remain the Top Vulnerability The most common issue is weak or default passwords, followed closely by outdated software. Automated attacks using brute force and dictionary tools make these an easy target. 4️⃣ Budgets Are On the Rise 74% of pentesting budgets are set to increase in the next 12 months, driven by evolving threats, cloud adoption, and regulatory compliance. Only 9% expect a decrease. 5️⃣ Comprehensive Security Requires More Than Tools Pentesters emphasize balancing human and technical vulnerabilities, integrating attack surface management (ASM), and automating tests to keep up with the pace of threats.
