@Microsoft has announced plans to build a new data center in northern Virginia using cross-laminated timber (CLT) as part of its initiative to combat rising carbon emissions. This innovative hybrid approach leverages fire-resistant and ultra-lightweight CLT to significantly reduce the need for steel and concrete, which are major contributors to carbon footprints. By integrating this material, Microsoft estimates a 35% reduction in embodied carbon compared to typical steel structures and a remarkable 65% reduction compared to concrete. This project is a significant step towards the company's goal of being carbon-negative by 2030. As part of a broader strategy, Microsoft is not only updating its contracts to prioritize low-carbon materials but also investing in carbon-free suppliers. Construction has begun on the Intacture data center at the San Romedio mine in Trento, set to become the world’s first data center in an active mine. This innovative facility will support colocation services starting in 2026, housing approximately 1,000 racks.
