Happiness Dollars

(edited transcript) One of the things that is really challenging is to manage our emotions in terms of our investments. And one of the ways that that's expressed is by watching everything. So the reality is the markets go up about 60% of the year but they go down about 40%. So if you watch every day what happens is our aversion to loss is anywhere between 2 to 4 times stronger than our appreciation of gain. So there's a happiness quotient. There's basically an appreciation for what is given and what is taken that happens. We can talk to those about happiness dollars maybe where if I were to give you a dollar you would be appreciative of that. You would be very, very happy. But if I were to take a dollar away from you, you would actually experience that loss 2 to 4 times more than you would have experienced the appreciation for gaining a dollar. What happens is, if we're watching the markets on a daily basis, and we take that emotion and we take that appreciation and we translate that onto what we think is happening to our portfolio, then we can experience some very tremendous lows relative to the highs that we actually experience across the market.

How Often to Check My Portfolio

(edited transcript) We often get asked how often we should look at our portfolios. And I'll just tell you from my perspective, from a personal standpoint, I usually look around once a quarter because I experience emotion just like clients experience emotion. It's one thing to talk to others about their money, and it's amazing how the emotions come into play when you focus on your own.
We know that the same part of the brain that gets triggered when we're in mortal danger also gets triggered when we have lost or perceived that we've lost money. My analogy is getting chased by a bear is, at least physiologically, the same as getting chased by a bear market. So when it comes to how often to look at your portfolio, just remembering that the market is up and the market is down. We can't tell you if you should look at it every day, once a quarter or once a year, but just understanding psychologically, how do you feel on the down days is probably a good indicator of how often you should look. Markets are efficient long-term. We know if you give them enough time they will be up. But we also know that in the short term, markets sometimes operate based off of emotion and inefficiencies. So how your brain operates during those time frames is probably a good indicator of how often you should be looking at your portfolio.

The Danger of Bubbles

(edited transcript) I think the thing about bubbles is that you’re really only in big, big danger of a bubble if, you’re participating in it in a meaningful way. The same people who fear bubbles and are trying to time bubbles or question whether we’re in a bubble are usually the people who have outside exposure to said bubble. As lame and cliché as it is, if you’re more diversified and if you’re not getting greedy, you might have a part of what is perceived to be more speculative and, and who’s to know whether something like AI is fairly valued today or not. That’s a very difficult conversation where there are very strong arguments to suggest it’s not even close to being as valuable or valued as much as it should be or will be in time. Some metrics that might suggest that we’ve gotten a little ahead of ourselves. More broadly, to the point about risk is don't be greedy. Diversify it. Don't have outsized exposure. Don't be the person loading up on a thousand rentals in 2008 trying to flip houses. Spread your chips out. Think again about where those exposures are. There are also plenty of ways to play those things in those stories in ways that might participate without having to take some of the risk of those specific names.

The Truth About Mr. Market

(edited transcript) There's an old market adage that goes along the lines of, “The market can stay irrational longer than most people can stay solvent.” Mr. Market does not care about your timelines. We wrote a piece years ago called Mr. Market. It's a pretty heartless dude. He doesn't care about your goals or your dreams. He certainly doesn't care about your timelines. You know, the market certainly can be a great catalyst, talking broadly about the equity market, for people over time, that can stay in. And so again, that's the idea of not needing something to happen over a certain time frame, but being able to stay a part of things and having a plan and a portfolio that allows that; cash flow and liquidity blended with your personal plan.So whatever happens over time, you get to be a part of that whole story.

Investing in a Voting Machine or a Weighing Machine

(edited transcript) Benjamin Graham has a famous quote that goes something along the lines of, “In the short run, the market is a voting machine.” i.e. very prone to emotion and people's feelings. “Over time it’s a weighing machine.”  There's going to be a truth mostly about earnings and what that company is or isn't able to produce in terms of profitability and so, "it’s very understandable" that clients want to try to make sense of the world they live in. I think it can make sense again, more so over time. Trying to look at, what the market may or may not do even to the same kind of data, the market will take good news and go down, or bad news and go up, which doesn't always make sense. There are some ways to parse it out, perhaps, but more importantly, again, is taking that time and energy, to “understand what" you're trying to achieve. I think it becomes an easier distraction with less personal accountability to focus on that 
then by saving enough. You know. Am I being too aggressive or too conservative in my portfolio? That's a tough look-in-the-mirror conversation where this can blame someone else. We're certainly trying to, not just get people over here but walk alongside them in answering those more personal questions.
