Unlike countries with organizations that evaluate both the clinical and cost-effectiveness of new #prescriptiondrugs during the approval process, such as the U.K.’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), U.S. regulators do not evaluate cost-effectiveness and accessibility. Notably, over 80% of the drugs approved in the U.S. since 2020 are not recommended by NICE, suggesting that many drugs are not providing value commensurate to their cost, even though the U.S. pays 2.7X more for these drugs than the U.K. pays. Ultimately, the benefits of an innovation cannot be fully realized if it is disconnected from affordability and access. More in #TheCompass . ⤵

Despite years of value-based care experimentation, its long-term viability as a strategy to reduce costs while improving quality remains in question. As of 2022, only 25.4% of U.S. healthcare payments flowed through value-based payment models, with #MedicareAdvantage representing the largest share (38.9%). More in #TheCompass . ⤵

This past Wednesday, our President and Chief Executive Officer took the stage at HLTH USA to open the #GLP1 Summit and provide his perspective on the landscape of #cardiometabolic disease management. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Despite spending nearly 2X more on healthcare than peer countries, the health status of Americans is deteriorating. From 2020 to 2050, the percentage of U.S. adults with chronic conditions is projected to increase by 12.4 percentage points. 2️⃣ Between 2020 and 2022, prescription volumes for GLP-1 medications increased 300%, and in 2021, national spending on #semaglutide (the peptide name for drugs like #Ozempic and #Wegovy ) totaled $10.7B. 3️⃣ The increase in GLP-1 use does not correlate with clinical indication. Just over half of patients taking GLP-1s have a history of type 2 diabetes or have an associated medical visit with their prescription.
