From October 28-30 AUP was honored to host Surréalismes Paris 2024 —the sixth conference of the International Society for the Study of Surrealism (ISSS) which aims to facilitate interdisciplinary and inter-regional exchanges on surrealism. In partnership with the German Center for Art History (DFK, Paris), the Université Jean Monnet Lyon-Saint-Étienne (ECLLA) and the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, the conference came in an important year for surrealism, with 2024 marking the centennial of André Breton’s First Manifesto, the publication of Louis Aragon’s Une Vague de rêves and the launch of the journal La Révolution surréaliste in the autumn of 1924. In honor of the occasion, the conference was one of numerous cultural events focusing on Surrealism (exhibitions, symposium, readings, publications) that are taking place across France. Alongside academic sessions and round tables, participants could also take part in other events: film projections, poetry readings, a visit to the Surrealism exhibition at the Musée National d’Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou, and more! While Tom Kennedy '90 was solo hitch-hiking around Europe he made a fateful visit to his mother's cousin in Alsace. Seeing Kennedy's curious spirit she suggested he interview at AUP (then ACP), which he did! Reflecting on that moment in the AUP magazine, Kennedy remembers her as the first person to offer "an alternative way of looking at one's life," someone who "seemed to be living a life she had chosen for herself." "Growing up gay in rural Ohio in the 1980s at the core of the AIDS crisis was not easy," he said, so by the time he was looking at colleges he knew he needed a change. In Paris, Kennedy discovered the wonders of city life, majored in Art History and began living "outside of normal prescribed life." And the adventures didn't stop after graduation. "A Greek artist known as Takis once told me to take advantage of every single opportunity that presents itself," says Kennedy. "I do that to this day and I've had an amazing life." #AUPAlumni #AUPMagazine

AUP's Director of Human Resources, Stephanie Buisson , and HR Administrative Executive Assistant, Sophia Stéphany , are always looking for ways to improve the wellbeing of faculty and staff. So when Buisson suggested launching an institutional challenge to get a group to run La Parisienne, an annual all female race with proceeds going to breast cancer research, the whole team mobilized. On a recent Sunday, months of hard work paid off as 30 women—15 walkers and 15 runners— from across AUP's faculty and staff gathered near the Eiffel Tower to participate in the 7-kilometer race. “The theme was flower power—some of us had flowers in our hair—and there was music everywhere," said Stéphany. "It was so festive and fun—there couldn’t have been better energy all day! And the brunch was so cozy. It was a great experience we will repeat next year." On October 24 we had the honor of celebrating the inauguration of the UNESCO Co-Chairs for Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, professors Claudia Roda and Susan Perry . We were joined by AUP President Sonya Stephens , UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini and Deputy U.S. Permanent Representative to UNESCO Jean Manes, who all spoke to the incredible accomplishment that this honor represents. Opening remarks by the dignitaries were followed by an exciting discussion on human rights and artificial intelligence featuring AUP alumni Boriša Falatar ’99 (Policy Director, EU Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA)), Nicole Santiago , Esq. ‘19 (Human Rights and Emerging Technology Research Manager, Trilateral Research LTD), Amelia Urwin ‘22 (Advisor to UNESCO’s Chief Information Technology Officer). The conversation was moderated by Ms. Inga Nichanian (Senior Program Assistant, Future of Learning and Innovation Division, UNESCO).
