We are celebrating our client, Erie Insurance Group as they kick off their Intentional Leadership Expo. Yesterday marked the first day, attended by over 300 leaders dedicated to personal and professional growth. In a world rife with polarized opinions, Mitch and Nat highlighted the privilege and responsibility leaders have to bridge divides and bring diverse voices together to achieve common goals. We’re thrilled to be a part of Erie Insurance’s commitment to developing transformational talent and fostering a culture of excellence.

With the US election results in, if you lead US teams, here are some things to consider to effectively support your team today: 1. Schedule meetings with sensitivity: If you are able, schedule meetings for the afternoon in US time. This allows team members more time to process the election outcome. For virtual meetings, expect more participants than normal may want the option to keep their cameras off. 2. Acknowledge emotions: Recognize that some team members may be experiencing strong emotions. Offer support and resources if needed, such as employee assistance programs. Remind team members that their colleagues may have different political views and to be mindful of others' feelings. 3. Focus on work priorities: Remind team members that regardless of the election outcome, the organization's goals and responsibilities remain the same. Encourage everyone to stay focused on what needs to be accomplished. 4. Establish clear expectations: Communicate that political discussions should not interfere with work or create a hostile environment for colleagues. 5. Emphasize shared goals: Highlight the team's common objectives and the importance of working together, regardless of political differences. 6. Lead by example: Avoid expressing personal political views or celebrating or lamenting the results in the workplace. Demonstrate calm and professional behavior to model composure and set the tone for your team. ** If you are a leader, keep these tips close to hand - although the US election is over, these strategies can be reused when overseeing team members from any nation facing heated electoral contests. **

On this Election Day in the USA, as you navigate a deeply polarized landscape, here are 5 key beliefs to help engage in more constructive conversations: 1. RESPECT COMES BEFORE AUTHENTICITY. When we prioritize respect while maintaining genuine expression, we create situations where productive dialogue thrives without silencing diverse perspectives or exacerbating divisions. 2. I CAN LEARN FROM EVERYONE. When we listen to people with growth in mind, we can gain new insight from every conversation, especially from those with whom we disagree. Our openness encourages others to consider our perspectives, which in turn helps break down barriers and spark real change. 3. WE ARE INCOMPLETE WHEN OPINIONS ARE HIDDEN. We aren’t better when people hide what they think. When we encourage people to speak honestly, we can address issues head on, challenge each other’s thinking, and build trust. 4. UNDERSTANDING BUILDS RELATIONSHIP. Understanding doesn’t mean agreement. However, to connect, collaborate, and work effectively with others, it is essential that we understand them. We build relationship with others when we understand their viewpoints, even when we fundamentally disagree. 5. MULTIPLE TRUTHS CAN EXIST AT THE SAME TIME. If we believe that our opinion is the only “right truth” it hampers our ability to understand others, be respectful when we disagree, and build strong relationships. Working effectively across lines of difference means acknowledging the validity of other perspectives, even when they differ from our own. Our differences don't have to divide us. Our fifth key belief that we covered during our session on "Creating Unity During Divisive Political Times" is: Key Belief #5. Multiple Truths Can Exist at the Same Time. This idea highlights that truth can be multidimensional especially when considering the different kinds of truth, such as my truth, your truth, accepted truth, and situational truth. In that case, my truth and your truth might be different even when we have experienced the same situation. Is a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius / 72 degrees Fahrenheit hot or cold? For someone who lives in Alaska, it might feel hot. For someone who lives in Mali, it might feel cold. Both of these are true for the person who believes it, but it’s not universally true for everyone. If we believe that our individual truth is the “only truth” or the “right truth” it hampers our ability to understand and learn from others, be respectful when we disagree, and build strong relationships. Accepting that multiple truths can exist at the same time fosters understanding, prevents us from judging others, and acknowledges that people’s beliefs can be valid even if they differ from our own. When encountering multiple truths in your daily life, explore the different truths by asking “What factors have impacted your opinion?”

For teams that are collaborating across time zones, we have one more major time zone shift happening this weekend when clocks change in: Bermuda, Canada, Cuba, Eqypt, Greenland, Haiti, Mexico, The Bahamas, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Turks & Caicos Islands, and the USA. Time zones will be stable (phew!) until March 9th when things change up several times again. For the next FOUR MONTHS, this can be your cheat sheet to ensure you're scheduling meetings with sensitivity and awareness. Happy collaborating!

It reminds us that we CAN connect with others and understand their viewpoints, even when we fundamentally disagree. And it's a reminder that this is something we MUST do if we want to connect, collaborate, and work effectively with others.
