A federal judge in the United States has ordered chemicals company Chemours to immediately cease unlawful discharges of PFAS, specifically hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or Gen-X), into the Ohio River from its Washington Works plant in West Virginia. The ruling, issued on August 7, 2025, follows a preliminary injunction granted to the West Virginia Rivers Coalition, which alleged repeated violations of environmental permits. The judge stated that Chemours has a history of exceeding legal discharge limits, endangering human health and aquatic life. The injunction will remain in effect until the court determines sustained compliance. Chemours has expressed disappointment and plans to appeal. The company previously faced significant PFAS-related settlements with New Jersey, including a proposed $2 billion deal where it would pay $875 million, and has contributed approximately half of a prior $1.2 billion joint settlement with DuPont and Corteva.
