 | When established in 1873, Canterbury College, as the University was originally known, was only the second university in New Zealand. Housed in graceful stone buildings on a central city block, it was dependent for survival on rents from high country farms with which it had been endowed by the Canterbury Provincial Council.

It was set up on the Oxbridge model with one major difference: women students were admitted from the start.

Last night, Canterbury business leaders came together for #UCIgnite 🎇📚which was a fantastic opportunity to share the launch of the Engineering Strategy 2030 with the Waitaha Canterbury community. The strategy focuses on collaboration, embedding Indigenous knowledge, and nourishing engaged partnerships. Executive Dean Engineering Professor Saurabh Sinha , emphasised that “Engineering can drive growth across sectors, but impactful partnerships are key.” A strong focus on people remained a theme for the night, with our expert panel all placing people at the centre of their discussion. Thank you to our panel, which included Distinguished Professor Geoff Chase , Sina Cotter Tait and Fritha McCrimmon-Robinson who took the themes of the new strategy and looked at their wider relationship to the industry. Meet self-described “people person”, Associate Professor Cathy Andrew , who is Executive Dean of UC Health . 👋👩⚕️ From working as a nurse to leading the faculty, Cathy has always been committed to helping people thrive. She says her pathway to becoming an academic leader was unconventional. “I’ve never studied full-time at a university, and I’ve never studied on site as a university student.” During her nursing career she worked in mental health, in the intensive care unit at Christchurch Hospital, and in private cardiothoracic care in London. Cathy enjoyed supporting patients at pivotal moments in their lives. “I like people, and I want them to live their best life no matter what’s going on for them. “As a nurse you see the fragility of human existence at its most raw, you’re with people in happy times and with people who are facing life changing events, for themselves and their family members. It was fantastic to see Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey at the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, in her role as Chair of the The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Council. The opportunity allowed Professor De la Rey to join the announcement of HRH King Charles’ Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, which was developed in response to urgent economic, social and environmental development challenges affecting Small Developing States (SID) like Samoa. The Vice-Chancellor also participated in a panel on ‘Transforming the Workforce,’ chaired by Lord (Hugo) Swire , Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth and Investment Council, and spoke at a CHOGM side-event hosted by the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Initiative (CSCI). Here, she highlighted the excellent work UC researchers are doing to advance the understanding and importance of building sustainable cities and communities in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. #UCResearch #UCLeaders #UCInternational .
