Improved Health Through High-Impact Research | The Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) was established in 1987 as a collaboration between researchers at Makerere, Columbia and John Hopkins Universities, the Division of Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Allergy &amp; Infectious diseases and the International Centre for Excellence Research (ICER). 
This was as a result of the first identification of clinical AIDS in Rakai district Uganda in 1982 by Drs. Nelson Sewankambo and David Serwadda.

Advancing toward a future without HIV. RHSP hosted an inspiring scientific presentation session with Natalie Howard on "Novel Strategies to Target Latent Reservoirs," highlighting groundbreaking research in HIV latency reversal. Key insights included the potential of blocking proteins PTPN1 and PTPN2 as a promising approach, alongside innovative findings around the FDA-approved compound Isotretinoin. When combined with IL-15, Isotretinoin has shown selective enhancement of cell death in reactivated HIV-infected cells, offering targeted action with minimal effect on uninfected cells. This work advances us closer to a globally accessible HIV cure—one step at a time towards a healthier future. #HIVResearch #CureHIV #GlobalHealth #RHSP

From October 21st to 24th, 2024, RHSP hosted its annual retreat, bringing together esteemed partners and collaborators from The Johns Hopkins University , Makerere University , Uganda Virus Research Institute , African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Science (ACE-B) , Columbia University , the The National Institutes of Health Institutes of Health, among others. The retreat focused on key updates from grants, research, and finances, as well as a productive research site visits. This is a collaborative effort to strengthens RHSP's strategic direction, driving innovation and success in global health research and community impact. #RHSPRetreat2024
