Let's stop giving the bulk of tax benefits to big corporations. As I said in a recent op-ed for Tax Analysts , most small businesses didn't benefit from the 2017 Trump tax cuts but Congress can do something about that in 2025 by offering a standard deduction on the first $25,000 in net income for pass-through entities instead of a 20% standard deduction. “America’s small business owners reflect the diversity of the United States: they vary in age and gender; education and income level; ethnicity and native language. But for all their differences, most small businesses agree that America’s tax system is skewed in favor of the largest corporations – and Congress needs to do something about it. They are, of course, correct. One example of this systemic imbalance is the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which radically overhauled corporate taxation in the United States. Passed in 2017, the TCJA was framed in part as offering significant tax relief for small businesses. The argument made by the law’s proponents was that a new 20% pass-through standard deduction under Section 199A would result in nationwide small business growth and keep small business rates competitive with corporations. For most small businesses, however, that hasn’t happened as nearly 70% of the current benefit flows to the wealthiest 4.5% of businesses. It’s no wonder that seven years later, Small Business Majority’s new research found 82% of small business owners agree that our tax system favors large corporations over small businesses like theirs, and three-quarters also agree that wealthy individuals and large corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes. With a skewed tax system, it’s not surprising that entrepreneurs favor reforms to make it more equitable: More than half (52%) of small businesses support increasing the corporate tax rate to 28% from the current rate of 21%.” Read the full op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/e7FRyujj

Affordable healthcare remains a challenge for small business owners. And in tight labor markets like Georgia, it’s an essential offering to attract great employees. Sadly, many small businesses fall into a “coverage gap” meaning they earn too much income to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private health insurance. It’s no wonder new research suggests that finding ways to close the “coverage gap” could create an estimated 51,000 new jobs in Georgia. For small business owners, closing that gap could even mean an additional $900 in annual personal income. Amid an unusual October jobs report in which natural disasters took a toll on hiring, some small businesses are saying that the pool of available labor is much better today than it was just two years ago. SBM network member Elaine Read of Atlanta found that when she was in a “hiring crunch” several years ago, there seemed to be “a lot of people assessing what they wanted to do with work.” Now? “Slightly more than a year ago is when we started seeing candidates who were a lot more enthusiastic and good enough fits for what we were hiring for,” she said.
