The fuel cell system can provide electricity in the megawatt range and is suitable for both direct integration in new builds and as retrofits in existing ships. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? The methanol fuel cell system is based on high-temperature (HT) PEM technology combined with methanol-reforming which ensures a simple system design with high energy conversion, efficiency, and system power density, built upon the principle of: INPUT Methanol, water, and air are added to the system. REFORMER The reformer converts the methanol and water into a hydrogen-rich gas. FUEL CELLS Multiple HT PEM methanol fuel cell stacks are placed in 200 kW cabinets. Combining several cabinets in a modular configuration the system can provide an energy load in the megawatt range. Unique for the HT PEM fuel cells is the potential for waste heat utilisation where part of the waste heat from the fuel cells is used to drive the process of reforming methanol and thereby optimising the total system efficiency. Furthermore, waste heat can also be used for additional energy recovery. Great progress for fuel cells at sea! 🛳 At the Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference in Bergen at the end of October, many interesting fuel cell projects were presented. Multiple fuel cell technologies are in play in different types of vessels, all with an aim to contribute to the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. Maersk was amongst the presenters, providing insight into their evaluation of fuel cells which includes a 1 MW pilot system delivered by Blue World. The 1 MW fuel cell, based on high-temperature (HT) PEM fuel cell technology using methanol as fuel, will be installed on a Hermes-class container ship in 2026. From kW to MW 📈 Our fuel cell systems vary in size, from smaller low-power systems containing just one 5 kW fuel cell stack to multi-megawatt fuel cell systems for maritime power generation. The fuel cell stacks are more or less the same in both systems, but the power output can be increased by connecting multiple stacks. We are connecting 5 200 kW fuel cell modules in our first maritime pilot system providing a power output of 1 MW. The flexibility of the fuel cells is one of many benefits making them a strong green alternative within many sectors. Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting an event for around 30 marine engineering students 💪 Two of our own Marine Engineers Christoffer Schou Christensen and Lasse Rosted Larsen provided them with an insight into the journey we are on here at Blue World, the fuel cell technology, the production of the membrane, electrodes, and bipolar plates, and the systems we are making as a green alternative to conventional combustion engines. Maritime is considered a hard-to-abate sector and is responsible for around 3% of global emissions. To decarbonise a sector that has been deeply dependent on fossil fuels for more than a century - and still is - new fuels and new technologies are required. This video shows how we see methanol and high-temperature PEM fuel cells contributing to maritime decarbonisation 💚🛳 Earlier this year, we successfully tested the first 200 kW HT PEM fuel cell module, and in 2026 the first 1 MW system is planned to provide power at sea.
