Layoffs start at federal health agencies that deal with drugs, food, insurance and more
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is undergoing a significant restructuring that involves substantial layoffs and budget cuts. The overhaul aims to reduce the department's workforce from approximately 92,620 employees in September 2024 to around 62,000, leading to the elimination of up to 10,000 positions. The layoffs are expected to impact various agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health, and Medicare and Medicaid Services. The restructuring also involves the elimination of $11 billion in COVID-19-related funds, leading to job cuts at state and local health departments. This move has been criticized by Democratic lawmakers and health officials, who argue that it will compromise the department's ability to monitor health trends, conduct medical research, and ensure food and medicine safety.
