Back in the day, did we really like our typewriters this much? Will unrealized fear of #AI tools prevent news organizations in #Africa and across developing democracies from making robust investments in #GenerativeAI applications to modernize operations, reach new and younger audiences, and re-engineer allocation of resources? Intriguing look at how African media outlets report on their own relationships with AI in the journal "Journalism and Media" from MDPI – where worry may lead to anxiety and missed opportunities, including the following perceptions: • AI will have a negative impact on trust and misinformation in news, which raises concerns about its financial viability for media organizations. • Concern among media workers that AI could render human journalists obsolete. • Big Tech usurping the role of traditional media and taking an increasing share of advertising revenue and even jobs. • Politicians prioritizing social media platforms more for voter outreach due to their AI-powered algorithms, which translates to further economic losses for traditional media outlets through loss of advertising revenue. • A wait-and-see position that acknowledges AI potential, but belief that AI tools are unproven technologies, with possibly high implementation costs, and uncertain return on investment. • Without a seat at the table amongst Big Tech companies, African nations have no voice in shaping how AI is developed and deployed. • Perceived risks of erosion of local journalism traditions, and the potential for AI to undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of news if not carefully managed. This includes the potential for AI to exacerbate existing power imbalances, where large technology companies, often based outside the continent exert control over the African media industry Yet all is not lost: • Some understanding of the AI potential for content creation, personalization, and metadata tagging—all aspects that can enhance user experience, attract new audiences, automate and streamline journalistic workflows, and ultimately offer a clear path towards financial stability for media outlets struggling with declining revenues. • Open-source platforms such as Zindi , Kaggle , and openAFRICA (from Code For Africa (CfA) ), as well as dataset development made available by the Lacuna Fund , offering African journalists, researchers, and practitioners avenues to curate and share locally relevant datasets. • Leadership from Dubawa in applying AI tools to fact-checking investigations This is precisely where #internationaldevelopment donors from governments and the private sector should double down on financial and technical investments in AI infrastructure for media outlets – Minimize the fear and financial risk to cash-strapped news organizations, and help local media companies transform their own reporting and business operations. #journalism #medialiteracy #disinformation #mediadevelopment

I had the incredible opportunity to represent Zindi and AI Ghana at this year’s Ghana Youth Tech Summit, which centered on "Leveraging Technology for Social Impact." The summit brought together students, internet safety specialists, entrepreneurs and policy makers like Nana Adjoa Adobea Khartey Isaac Newton Acquah and Gabriel Ofori Appiah Eric Hackman , all committed to using tech to drive positive change. During my session, I was proud to talk about Zindi and our ongoing Ghana Crop Disease Detection Challenge. This challenge, in partnership with GIZ Ghana and Responsible AI Lab , aims to develop machine learning models to predict crop diseases in images of corn, pepper, and tomato crops. After nearly 5 years of dedication, countless hours of learning, and 47 competition medals (25 🥇, 12 🥈, 10 🥉), I've achieved something I never imagined possible as a freshman when I started my Zindi Journey: reaching the top spot on Zindi 's global leaderboards! It all started at Multimedia University of Kenya 's CIT club. That's where I met Lawrence Moruye , who first taught us about data science. But what really inspired me was watching him win competition after competition. Seeing his success lit a fire in me - I thought, "If he can do it, why can't I?" His victories became my motivation. Every time I saw him win, I pushed myself harder, determined to reach his level. Success is sweeter when shared, and I owe immense gratitude to: Lawrence Moruye - you showed me what's possible. Your competition wins weren't just your victories - they were the fuel that kept me going when things got tough. Yohannes Melese - we met as strangers on Zindi, became teammates, and now we're close friends. We've won so many competitions together! Victor Olufemi - your GitHub projects taught me so much. You showed me why sharing our work matters, and now I share my projects too. The entire Zindi community - you pushed me to do better every day.
