We believe there is a 'missing-middle' in climate finance, where many climate solutions don't fit neatly into existing VC, PE, or private debt strategies. The Planet Fund aims to bridge this gap by offering flexible funding solutions tailored to the needs of climate-tech startups - often those involved in manufacturing or more asset intensive solutions.

Last week, we hosted a climate lunch at Ecotone Ventures on AI’s role in the climate transition, inviting special guest Dr. Kendra Vant.

The conversation was thought provoking - exploring the opportunity AI plays in accelerating the climate transition as well as its challenges. Some of our key insights are summarised below:

💡 AI has evolved over the past 50 years to include advanced capabilities like Gen AI that produces content that is comparable to what humans can produce - however, Gen AI models use a lot more data and computational power than traditional models. 🔌

💡 Due to Gen AI being the most energy-intensive form of AI in large data centre servers, there is an urgent push to decarbonise these operations, intensifying competition for green energy sources. ⚡️

💡 Addressing embodied carbon is also crucial, as a significant portion of emissions stem from the creation and disposal of AI systems and servers i.e. the energy intensity of semiconductor fabrication and considerations around recycling. 🚧

💡 While AI may not be the panacea for solving the climate crisis, traditional AI models can help solve discrete climate problems such as weather forecasting, energy demand predictions and optimisation models. 🌱

On the eve of Climate Action Week Sydney, we hosted a climate lunch at Ecotone Ventures on Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia, inviting special guest Charlie Day, CEO of Jupiter Ionics.

The conversation was thought provoking - exploring the potential of hydrogen in our transition to a net zero economy. Some of the key insights are summarised below:

 💡 There are various 'types of hydrogen' - green, blue, pink, turquoise and gold. Each are sourced differently and produced through distinct methods. 🌀 

💡 The cost of hydrogen is on a downward trend, propelled by technological advancements and the emergence of new applications that are driving down production costs. ⏬ 

💡 While hydrogen may not directly substitute fossil fuel-based electricity, understanding its use cases is crucial. For instance, hydrogen plays a vital role in the production of ammonia for agriculture, where it serves as a needed chemical element. ✨
