We were lucky enough to have mental health advocate and founder of the Heart On My Sleeve movement MITCH WALLIS join us to share his powerful story plus some practical tips to support people who need it (spoiler alert: they’re the opposite of what most of us have been doing!). We’re sharing his number one insight on mental health and seven practical tips to help you have a healthy, happy and supported holiday break.

While traditional conversations revolve around IQ and ‘solving’ or moving away from the problem, the best way to help someone is by having a real conversation. This strategy is about moving toward the issue, using EQ and relationship tactics like connection and understanding to really listen and help the person see you’re there to help. 

✅ Mitch’s 7 support tips

1️⃣ Slow down on solutions – stay curious instead of assuming you know what’s best
2️⃣ Check in, don’t tick boxes – engage proactively with care instead of ignoring conversations that need to be had
3️⃣ Keep a lookout – notice changes behavioural changes instead of being too busy to pay attention
4️⃣ Tell them why – validate their feelings instead of just listening
5️⃣ Build emotional resilience – let things land abd sit in the mud instead of filling in silence
6️⃣ Reduce risk by addressing risk – ask directly about safety instead of ignoring the elephant in the room
7️⃣ Show, don’t tell – role model healthy practices instead of doing the opposite of what you’re telling others to do
