Looking back on the year 2023, we'd like to highlight an episode of our #SHIFTbyAI podcast...

ICYMI on this episode of the SHIFT podcast, Alvin First Rider, Environmental Technician with Blood Tribe Land Management, Emily Herdman, Technical Lead of Environmental Services with InnoTech Alberta, and Brett Purdy, Executive Director of Environmental Innovation with Alberta Innovates, stopped by to talk about their work on the Blood Tribe Buffalo Restoration Project.

Alvin is a member of the Káínawa, or Blood Tribe, in southern Alberta. Extending into US territory, these lands form the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Alvin speaks about his nation's use of both western science and Blackfoot ecological knowledge to restore buffalo back to their historical plains.

This project is part of an intertribal effort to restore the great plains ecosystem and to reclaim the traditions of the Indigenous peoples who have occupied these lands for countless generations. The work of this project has also been documented in the video series Sacred Science.

Sacred Science is produced in collaboration between Indigenous communities in Alberta, Alberta Innovates, and InnoTech Alberta as a step on our journey of Reconciliation and Indigenous inclusion. The video series tells the stories of how these communities are leveraging both Indigenous ecological knowledge and western science to tackle complex conservation and land management challenges and preserve their traditional cultures. 

Some other projects documented in this video series include "The Caribou Conservation Project" by the Denesųłiné of Cold Lake First Nations (CLFN) and the "Red River Environmental Project" by the Fort McKay Métis Nation.
