In the past 4 years, public sector banks (PSBs) have rerated due to improvement in RoE/growth, which narrowed the valuation discount to private banks. There was fundamental improvement in business/practices of some PSBs w.r.t. loan-book diversification, expansion in sourcing channels and lower TAT, and better underwriting and collection infrastructure. Our analysts, Pankaj Agarwal, CFA, Prabal Gandhi and Pratik Matkar believe that earnings momentum will continue with lower credit-deposit (CD) ratio and higher share of marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) linked loans supporting net interest margins (NIMs). Higher share of corporate loans (lower risk at present), retail loan exposure to high-end customers, lower share of unsecured loans and high PCR would keep asset quality in check.

The #auto sector witnessed a broad-based recovery in demand in the last two years driven by post-Covid surge. But, our analysts, Jinesh Gandhi, Rohit Bajaj and Raghvendra Goyal, expect divergent trends in demand over the next 2-3 years. In business-as-usual scenario, they expect favourable demand environment for: a) two-wheelers (2Ws), led by sustained broad-based recovery in domestic and exports starting to recover, b) Tractors, led by normal monsoon + benefit of ramp-up in agri machinery, and c) light commercial vehicles (LCVs), led by recovery in consumption economy.
