Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) is an Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) regional corporation for the Bering Strait and Norton Sound region and is owned by more than 8,000 Alaska Native shareholders. The BSNC region is located in Northwest Alaska and is home to three culturally distinct people: Inupiat, Siberian Yupik and Central Yup'ik. 

BSNC actively pursues responsible development of resources and other business opportunities. Through its subsidiaries, BSNC serves the federal government and commercial customers. BSNC owns and manages the subsurface estate of the region's 17 village corporations (approximately 2 million acres), as well as the surface and subsurface estates of an additional 145,000 acres. The Corporation is headquartered in Nome, Alaska, and its primary business office is located in Anchorage, Alaska. BSNC seeks a qualified Legal Summer Associate for its Anchorage office. This position will provide exposure to corporate law, employment law, contract law, federal Indian law, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and other areas of the law impacting Alaska Native Corporations daily. They will assist the General Counsel, Associate General Counsel and the Legal Department with research, discovery, drafting, document preparation, contract review and other duties. This position is ideal for a law school student interested in developing their writing skills and knowledge of the law in a corporate and business setting.

BSNC is pleased to share another video in its series titled Mazzaq Tigittuaq. In this video, BSNC shareholders living in Shishmaref, Alaska share their knowledge about hunting, processing and the significance of ugruk (bearded seal) and natchik (seal). 

A crucial subsistence resource, seal continues to play an indispensable role in the daily lives of Our People. Seal oil holds a significant place as a nutritious and staple food in our communities. The process of preparing seal, from rendering oil to preserving the meat, can be a detailed and time-consuming endeavor. Beyond its dietary significance, seals serve a versatile role in our communities, including in crafting essential items such as boots, hats, mittens, rain gear and various other clothing items. Every part of the seal is utilized, reflecting the resourcefulness and sustainability inherent in our practices.

BSNC would like to highlight the innovative achievements of BSNC shareholder Henry “Hank” Ryan. Ryan is the inventor of the “Ryan Tape Anchor,” a weighted device designed to improve the use of a tape measure.  
 
Ryan's frustration utilizing a tape measure on a construction job outdoors in cold and windy conditions led him to invent the Ryan Tape Anchor. Ryan drove to Lowes, purchased some materials and ordered a few strong magnets. He then put his invention together and submitted it to InventionHome. In 2017, Ryan applied for and received a utility patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  
 
The Ryan Tape Anchor weighs 12 oz, easily attaches to any tape measure and serves to secure and stabilize the tape when measuring. This feature proves especially useful when working at heights or in windy conditions.
