BitGo adds South Korean giants SK and Hana as partners for local arm

BitGo has formed strategic partnerships with Hana Financial and SK Telecom, with Hana acquiring a 25% stake and SK Telecom acquiring a 10% stake in BitGo Korea. This collaboration is expected to enhance BitGo's service offerings in South Korea, particularly in user authentication and security. The partnerships are part of BitGo's efforts to establish a strong presence in the region as it seeks to obtain a license as a virtual asset service provider (VASP). The CEO of BitGo, Mike Belshe, announced these developments during the Korea Blockchain Week 2024, highlighting the significance of these partnerships for the institutionalization of virtual assets in South Korea.

BitGo provides a digital asset platform that allows institutions and platforms to securely manage and grow their digital assets. The company offers multiple wallet services, financial services, protocol solutions, and development tooling. Self-described as a trusted solution in crypto.

Founded in 2013 — the early days of crypto — BitGo pioneered the multi-signature wallet and later built TSS to improve upon other companies’ MPC offerings. Over the years, BitGo has expanded from offering wallets into providing a full-suite solution that lets clients hold assets safely and then put them to work.

BitGo launched BitGo Trust Company in 2018, providing fully regulated, qualified cold storage to complement BitGo Inc’s original hot wallet solution. In 2020, BitGo launched BitGo Prime, which allows its clients to trade, borrow, and lend. Moreover, BitGo also provides access to DeFi, staking, NFT wallets, and beyond, and serves as the world’s sole custodian for WBTC, or wrapped Bitcoin.

Today, BitGo is the leader in digital asset security, custody, and liquidity, providing the operational backbone for more than 700 institutional clients in over 50 countries — a list that includes many regulated entities and the world’s top cryptocurrency exchanges and platforms. BitGo also processes approximately 20% of all global Bitcoin transactions by value.
