In a significant step forward in medical science, researchers from Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research have successfully conducted the first double neural bypass operation - employing our Utah Array. 

Keith Thomas, a 45-year-old man paralyzed from the chest down due to a diving accident, is the first to experience the transformative results of this operation. 

The researchers successfully implanted our Utah Array into specific regions of Thomas's brain to stimulate motion and feeling. When Thomas visualizes a movement, our device captures the electrical signals in his brain and relays them to a computer that decodes the signals and stimulates the appropriate muscles, thus facilitating the movement Thomas imagines.

The same process aids in restoring Thomas's sense of touch. Sensors on his skin send signals to the computer, which communicates with the Utah Arrays in his brain, enabling him to experience tactile sensations once again. Post-operation, Thomas has demonstrated significant progress, regaining the ability to move his arms and feel sensations on his skin.

This operation marks a remarkable advancement in paralysis research and brain-computer interfacing, taking a giant leap forward in our understanding and ability to restore mobility and sensation in individuals affected by paralysis.

Chips on your mind? 🍟

The idea of having a chip installed on your brain brings thoughts of a dystopian nightmare for many. 

The recent news from Neuralink shows its now a reality and I was surprised to find out that BlackRock owned competitor, Blackrock Neurotech has been implanting brain-computer interfaces since 2004 🤯.

They've installed 50 chips similar to the Neuralink's one to date and so we now have a competitive market of privately owned companies that are developing technology which will be symbiotic with your thoughts. 🧠🤖

What a time to be alive!

During the early 19th century people were terrified to get on a train for the first time as they feared its speed would kill them...

It didn't and now we can't recognise a world without the locomotive.🚂

A new piece in Scientific Reports from Stanford University, Brown University, and Harvard Medical School's visionary researchers showcases a truly groundbreaking advancement in implantable BCI technology: Recurrent neural network-enabled control over multiple effectors.

This innovation opens the door to bimanual tasks and movements—imagine controlling two computer cursors or operating dual robotic arms simultaneously, all through the power of thought.
 
This work provides critical insight, tackle the longstanding challenge of interpreting complex and nonlinear neural signals. By employing recurrent neural networks, the team has unlocked high-quality, bimanual control, fine-tuning the system to distinguish between left and right-hand movements effectively.

A core element of this study is Blackrock Neurotech’s technology. Our 96-channel intracortical microelectrode arrays (Utah Arrays), placed within the participant's precentral gyrus, and NeuroPort system were instrumental in capturing and processing the neural signals necessary for this achievement.

This leap in BCI capability is not just a milestone in neurotech, but a notable advancement in the continuation of unlocking new frontiers and possibility.
