𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗖 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗘𝗖𝗖 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | Maastricht as European hub for 2,600 environmental professionals

MECC Maastricht will be hosting the 36th edition of the annual European conference of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) from 16-21 May 2026. The conference offers a forum for collaboration and knowledge exchange between environmental professionals. In the past, the European event has been held in cities such as Copenhagen, Dublin and Seville, and in 2025 it will take place in Vienna. 

No less than 2,600 participants are expected to attend the event in Maastricht in May 2026. The SETAC conference will cover topics that align with the expertise of the Brightlands campuses in Maastricht, Geleen, and Venlo and research institutes such as the cross-border Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM).

Last week, the contract was signed by Bart Bosveld, Global Executive Director of SETAC and Frank Mimpen, MECC Maastricht Commercial Director.

De EU waardeert Provincie Limburg met het label Regional Innovation Valley. Met deze toekenning van de EU kunnen we verder investeren en onze innovatiekracht vergroten. Dit biedt mooie kansen en is een erkenning van de Limburgse positie als koploper op het vlak van innovatie.
EU-Commissaris Ivanova stelt in 2025 46 miljoen euro beschikbaar voor de Europese regio’s met dit innovatielabel. Het innovatiepotentieel uit deze regio’s is hard nodig om de globale uitdagingen aan te pakken en te zorgen voor een stevige concurrentiepositie van Europa.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘄𝗮 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 | Wetenschapper Bert Meijer geldt als een pionier in polymeren. Als hoogleraar aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en oprichter van het Institute for Complex Molecular Systems sleutelt en bouwt hij al meer dan 40 jaar met moleculen aan nieuwe structuren en polymeerketens. Eind mei gaf hij de Medema Award Lezing tijdens de Brightlands Polymer Days op de Brightlands Chemelot Campus. Waar hij pleitte voor fundamentele wetenschap en meer nuance in de discussies.

𝗛𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗳𝘁𝘂𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘇𝗼𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 | In Nederland worden steeds meer mensen geconfronteerd met armoede en schulden. Het probleem is complex. Een systematische aanpak is essentieel.

Bij het ELSA Lab Armoede en Schulden zetten onderzoekers zich dagelijks in om via technologie en artificial intelligence (AI) bij te dragen aan oplossingen. Zo wordt AI ingezet voor de vroege signalering van schulden. Met virtual reality kunnen beleidsmakers ervaren hoe het is om in armoede te leven. Dit leidt tot meer begrip en empathie én hopelijk tot beter beleid.

Onderzoekers Cassy Juhasz, Johan van Soest en Lisa Brüggen geven een kijkje in de keuken van ELSA Lab Armoede en Schulden. “Het ELSA Lab heeft als doel om op verantwoorde wijze technologie en artificial intelligence (AI) in te zetten om armoede en schulden te bestrijden”, vertelt Brüggen. “De gemeente Heerlen – een van de armste gemeenten van Nederland – fungeert als proeftuin voor ons onderzoek.”
